We're now third fourth years (and I'm now a
postdoc), so I need to update this page further, arrgghh!!. This page
has now been updated a bit. Also have a look at Lisa's Mr Astronomer
page.
Another academic year has arrived and we're now third years (guess who's feeling old...). Unfortunately we'll be leaving soon (if we finish on time), and will probably have to leave the wonderful Institute of Astronomy. I feel like crying after writing that.
This page is the home of the third years who are doing PhDs at the Institute of Astronomy. If you know any of these people, or know any gossip about them, please send information for incorporation... Complaints to Jeremy Sanders please.

David was previously at the Cavendish across the road, but we won't hold that against him. He's working on gravitational lensing with Richard Ellis and Alexandre Refregier. He insists gravitational lensing is the most important branch of astronomy, and should be taught at the expense of all others! He is known in the department as "Mr Evil", as he is known to make tea for himself and no one else! Could anything else be worse? Specialisms: Permanent good humour and lensing his nose (sadly now taken off the internet).
Otherwise known as Mr Boogie-Wonderland. Andrew came to us from Birmingham. Since that he's been working with the instrumentation group developing CIRPASS. He tries to convince us that his PhD isn't on installing RedHat Linux. Specialisms: Maintaining the 3rd years' transportation service (his car).
Andrew is a New Zealander, although he was born in Yorkshire. He joined us from Part III Mathematics in Cambridge, having previously studied Physics and Biology in New Zealand. Andrew is working with Richard McMahon on traveling to Chile as often as is humanly possible. Or should that be clustering at high redshift? He loves snow, rain and the cold. Specialisms: Avoiding cabbage and photographs.
Chris is another person who came from Cambridge, having done Part II Physics and Part III Mathematics. He's working on solar theory, with Douglas Gough as his supervisor. Chris is our own resident pedant (though he would point out he doesn't live in the department). He can also spot innuendo five feet away (ooh-err!). Specialisms: Impersonating David Bacon and looking down on observers.
Raquel comes from Spain and previously studied in London. She has a good relationship with Muon, the departmental cat. Raquel is working on black holes with Andy Fabian, but don't let her suck you into that subject. Specialisms: Wearing scarves (she loves the warm!) and drinking herbal tea.
Andrea is originally from Rome. He is working on the exciting subject of black holes and accretion disc theory with Andy Fabian. Andrea has already been published (his work, not himself) and has already earned a reputation for hard work... Specialisms: Beard wearing.
Steve came to Cambridge from Birmingham. He is working with George Efstathiou on analysing power spectra from large data sets. I could tell you the truth here, but he'd murder me. Universally known as a "dodgy geezer", do not let this man near any Stella Lager. He is famous for night when he thought it would be a good idea to go on holiday after a drinking spree. He ended up in a Heathrow, almost on a flight to Turkey. Specialisms: Burying hoovers and washing carpets.
Celine previously studied Part III Maths in Cambridge. She originally came from France, but did her undergraduate degree at Keele. No one knows her exact title of work, but it is rumoured to be `cosmology' with Mike Irwin, but I suspect it's slightly less specialised. Specialisms: Saying `boo hoo!' when happy.
Jeremy was an undergrad here, and did Part III Physics. He's working on the structure of cores of galaxy clusters using observations by Chandra. Jeremy spends half his life denying he does CompSci, and the other half doing tech-support for the X-ray group and 3rd years. He also has a randomness index of PI/2. Specialisms: Stochastic mishearing (what - with an elephant?) and binning.
Rob was originally at Leicester. He's working with Richard McMahon doing high redshift optical and IR quasar surveys. He manages to combine the activities of doing a PhD and being Churchill College's MCR President at the same time. He is also researching into the area of filing of documents. His desk is an example of the "first in, first on floor" filing technique, using the innovative method of using coke-cans as bookmarks. Specialisms: Alcohol.
Mark was previously at Southampton studying Astrophysics. He's working with Richard Ellis on the Supernova Cosmology Project. When questioned about his new girlfriend, all Mark could say is "Mmmm... she's Mexican!". Specialisms: Knowing gorgeous women (or so says Chris).
Lisa joined us from Part III Physics at Cambridge. She's working on modelling galaxy formation with George Efstathiou. Lisa is remembered for a number of events, including the numerous "I have never" incidents, the "Towel incident" (on holiday with Steve - your imagination will fill in the gap), and the "What time is it, Lisa?" incident (Do not attempt to read the time on a watch whilst holding an unfinished cup of tea in the same hand). Specialisms: Getting on so well with Steve, and saying how "Looovvveellly" her boyfriend is.
